Safari Float

About this experience

A unique way to experience Costa Rica's natural beauty and wildlife. Slowly floating down the Peñas Blancas River in a raft. With rainforest on both sides of the river, makes you surround by nature and wildlife. Family friendly experience, you bilingual nature guide will explain step by step about the environment.
The drive to the Peñas Blancas river is only 20 minutes. The float takes about two hours with a small fruit break half way down. When we get back to La Fortuna, we provide a typical organic Costa Rican lunch. We make you homemade coffee and take you for a small walk up behind the restaurant, to show you how we grow organic. We finish with a sugarcane demonstration where you get to take the pure sugarcane juice.

Planning perspective

How I’d plan this experience

If you want wildlife and rainforest without making the river itself the main physical challenge, I’d put this Safari Float on your shortlist. The Peñas Blancas outing is described as a slow float, with a guide explaining the environment, fruit along the way, and lunch after returning to La Fortuna. I think its appeal is the combination: a relaxed river experience followed by a meal and a small look at organic growing and sugarcane. It’s a fuller half-day than the float alone, so plan for the whole four hours rather than treating it as a quick paddle.

A good fit for curious, unhurried families

I’d recommend this to families and nature-minded visitors who would rather watch and learn than race down a river. The experience is presented as family friendly and suitable across fitness levels; traveller feedback also repeatedly highlights guides explaining wildlife and being patient with young children. Wildlife sightings are a possibility, not a promise, so I’d choose it for the guided time in nature rather than a specific animal checklist.

The float itself is described as calm and scenic by travellers, but the strongest practical value seems to come from having someone point out what you might otherwise miss. That makes it a particularly sensible choice if you enjoy asking questions and taking your time.

Choose the complete outing, not just the river

There is one listed option, Safari Float, rather than a menu of different float styles to compare. I’d choose it if the meal and cultural-demonstration elements sound as appealing as the river: the overview includes an organic Costa Rican lunch, coffee, a short walk to see organic growing, and a sugarcane demonstration. If you mainly want time on the water, bear in mind that these extra elements are part of the day’s appeal, not incidental details.

The float is about two hours, with a fruit break halfway through, while the total experience is listed as four hours. That’s a useful distinction when deciding whether this fits around other plans.

Sort out the start and transport beforehand

The listed start and end point is in La Fortuna, and the option also describes pickup as included. I’d make the pickup arrangement your first logistics question: the timing varies by accommodation, and the information says the team coordinates timing and locations. Don’t assume a particular pickup time from the four-hour duration alone.

Allow for a day that begins with the drive to the river and continues after the float. The overview estimates the drive at 20 minutes, then describes lunch and activities back in La Fortuna. In other words, the river is the centrepiece, but not the entire itinerary.

The trade-off: relaxed pace, no guaranteed sightings

This is a slow float, not an adrenaline-focused rafting trip. I think that’s a strength if you want time to scan the riverbanks and listen to a guide, but a limitation if you’re hoping for a fast, physically demanding adventure. Travellers describe guides as knowledgeable and mention spotting wildlife, yet sightings naturally vary; I wouldn’t book around a particular species or assume every outing will produce the same list.

The group format is shared, with a stated maximum of 60 travelers. If you value a quiet, intimate outing above all else, that capacity is worth weighing against the easygoing, guided format.
