Sloth Tour in La Fortuna and Tortillas Cooking Class

About this experience

Our 1.5km Trail offers one of the best opportunities to observe sloths in their natural habitat.

During this journey, we'll be witnessing various animals in their natural state, and that's why our guide will be responsible for showing us the best way to enjoy them without causing stress or disruption to their daily lives.

Both two- and three-toed sloths are now common on our property, which we've reforested and protected for many years. This is the fruit we want to share with you—a haven for sloths in the heart of Fortuna de San Carlos.

Our guide will share impressive details about these animals, concluding the tour with a small tasting of artisanal sugarcane juice and a traditional tortilla-making class with Doña Elith. Not to mention, a visit to her medicinal plant garden.

Undoubtedly, it's a complete experience of nature and culture in one place.

Sloth Tour in La Fortuna and Tortillas Cooking Class

Planning perspective

How I’d plan this experience

I’d choose this two-hour experience when you want a wildlife-focused outing that does more than chase a single animal sighting. The appealing balance is a guided nature walk followed by an active, food-centred finish: you look for sloths and other small wildlife, then make a tortilla and share a snack. It strikes me as especially well suited to families, first-time wildlife watchers and travellers who prefer a gentle, contained activity over a long hike. My advice is to arrive interested in the whole forest, not only in checking off a sloth; that mindset will make the experience richer if animals are tucked away or inactive.

Choose it for guided spotting, not a guaranteed wildlife tally

I’d recommend this most strongly if you value help noticing what is easily missed. Sloths, frogs, birds, bats, insects and lizards can all be part of the walk, and the guide’s interpretation is a major part of the experience rather than an add-on. Traveller feedback repeatedly highlights close-up viewing through a spotting scope and the difference a knowledgeable guide makes when animals are high in the trees or camouflaged.

The trade-off is inherent to a natural habitat: sightings and animal behaviour will vary. Rain can affect what you see, and sloths may be less visible when they curl up in wet conditions. I think it is still a sensible rainy-day choice for people happy to focus on the plants, smaller creatures and learning, but not for anyone expecting a wildlife show on demand.

A good fit for relaxed walkers and mixed-age groups

The 1.5 km trail and fixed two-hour format make this a practical choice when you want nature without committing a large part of the day. I’d put it high on the list for families with young children, people easing into Costa Rica’s wildlife experiences, or anyone who wants an unhurried walk rather than an athletic excursion. The route is described as suitable for all physical fitness levels, and feedback characterises it as flat and easy.

That said, gentle does not mean hands-off. The cooking section gives everyone something to do, which should help keep children engaged after the wildlife walk. If your group has a stroller, the experience is listed as stroller accessible; I’d still treat the walk as an outdoor trail and pack with the weather and bugs in mind.

Treat the tortilla class as a substantial part of the outing

I’d choose this over a walk-only wildlife activity if you enjoy participation and local food traditions. The finale is not merely a drink stop: you press cane for juice, make your own tortilla, and eat it with arracache hash, fried cheese and seasonal juice. That gives the tour a satisfying change of pace and makes the experience feel more rounded for groups whose interests span nature and cooking.

My advice is to view the included food as a typical snack or light meal component rather than plan around it as a full lunch. Feedback suggests the portion can be more filling than expected, but appetites differ. The medicinal-plant garden is another useful cultural layer for curious travellers who like connecting food with the surrounding plant life.

Plan the meeting point and cancellation window before committing

This is a meet-at-the-start-point experience, so I’d choose it when you are comfortable arranging your own way there; transportation is not included. Bring the booking on your phone or on paper for reception. English and Spanish guides are offered, which is helpful for mixed-language planning.

For flexibility, the stated full-refund deadline is at least 24 hours before departure. Weather and insufficient traveller numbers can also lead to cancellation, so I think this works best as an activity you can place in a day with a little room to rearrange plans if needed.
