Your base shapes the small journeys that happen every day: finding breakfast, returning after an outing, choosing dinner and making an early departure. A striking photograph can start the search. A useful decision comes from matching the actual location and facilities to the way you want to spend your time.
Town convenience or a more self-contained stay?
The tourism board’s mini-guide distinguishes accommodation in town from properties along the road toward the national park and farther toward Lake Arenal. That is a broad geographic starting point, not a ranking. “La Fortuna” in a property description can cover different daily arrangements.

If you like choosing meals as the day unfolds, consider how you will reach the places you want to use. If you expect to spend more time at one property, check what is actually available there and at what times. Neither approach is automatically better. The right question is which one supports your own pattern of travel.
Test an ordinary day before an ideal one
Imagine returning from a walk with damp belongings and a group that wants dinner. Where will you put things, how will you get to food and how complicated is the return? Then imagine the morning you leave: what time will transport arrive, and what needs to happen before that?
Those two moments often reveal more than a list of facilities. Ask a property about the details you will rely on, including access to your room, laundry or drying arrangements, meal options and the practical route from the entrance. Avoid assuming that a general label such as “accessible” answers a specific mobility need.
Compare the whole arrangement

A photograph records particular weather and a particular position. Ask whether a pictured view is from the room category you are considering, a shared area or somewhere nearby. Choose a stay you would still enjoy when the distant landscape is not fully visible.

Make fewer assumptions about transport
A transfer included in one activity does not necessarily solve the rest of the day. Confirm whether the provider serves your exact property, and where a return trip ends. If you are arranging your own transport, ask about the actual route and parking rather than relying on a distance alone.
Our suggestion is to choose a base after sketching two or three days, then remove any plan that depends on repeated inconvenient journeys. Start with a waterfall day and an Arenal-area walk. Leave a free interval for the town itself.
